Post  Marco825 on Thu Nov 07 2013, 01:44

Hi,
my name is Mariusz and l'm originally from Poland,( in Leeds ,UK from 2006)
I;ve started my adventure with canaries when l was 12, and it's all my uncle's "fault" Very Happy ,l just to breed canaries and european finches like goldfinch, redpoll, linnet in Polland before l've decided to move to UK ...... Shocked
......and l 've started or came back to hobby just couple monts ago. When l visited Stafford on 13th oct together with my friend l was surprised about quality and number of birds Shocked
anyway ..... Now i'm owner of red factor pair ( int ck x non int hen) , yellow mosaic agates pair, red ivory mosaic cock, mayor goldfinch x native cock ( has beautifull goldie song but sings quiet) and pair of gold lizards ( bought them beacouse of sentimental memories from Poland when my uncle just to breed them ) and pair of red siskins  ( hen actually sitting on 5 eggs) my avatar picture is actual photo of red hooded siskin's nest)
Mariusz ( but all my friends in UK call me Marco)

Hi Marco and welcome to the forum,,
To have your siskins on eggs atm you must have some sort of heat or lights in your birdroom? If your canaries are in the same room they will be a bit mixed up as to what season they are in. this could lead to difficulties come breeding season..

i used to breed red siskins, first season was a learning curve lost a lot of young ones.some people who i spoke 2 said they bred them with no heat im talking our breeding season (uk),i did this with little success, then done a bit of research, they are a south american bird from veniszwaler (< wrong spelling i know), and in the evening the hen can come off to roost,so when they do the same over here of course the chicks die she gets on them early in the morning your none the wiser.so i found this to be true, so what i did in the evening was put a lamp near the nest ,of couse temperature must be right, and heypresto, bred them.. then the nightmare came, had built up a nice few pairs all exciting for the coming breeding season, one bad night the wind blows my window out of shed not even one bird survived could not believe it,all the money time everything gone in one night, ive had the odd cock bird but no pairs since as they were expensive at the time ranging from £120-£150 a pair,,, but lovely birds good luck with them..(p.s not saying you cant breed them without heat just saying in my own experince)

Thanks for the reply. Siskins are in home and canarys are in shed so hopefully everything will be fine.
Idea with bulb over nest sounds good to me.
