I am hoping to achieve the following Colours and pattern in my " Roller Projects ", red factor, orange, opal, mosaic in both yellow and red, prefer yellow. so i shall be asking you all for some advice along the way Kind regards Ohartzerman.

You got to start somewhere and time isn't a problem for me. As i suffered a Stroke in the workplace 12 months ago so i am at home of a day now not working. So i spend a bit of time with the birds now and thought i will give a " Colour Project " a go. Kind regards Ohartzerman

Re: New to the forum
that little project should keep you busy for a while,,,orange will be easy enough,,,red factor to yellow roller will produce orange young,,,opal if you are breeding green opal that is would be pretty easy too,,,but full red and mosaics will take a few seasons,,,especially as you will need to retain the roller song aswell as produce the colour/type,,,best of luck m8,,,hope you achieve your goals,,,johnboy...

Yeah thanks Chris, lots of reading lol.
Johnboy, ok here we go lol. All of my Roller stock at present consist of variegated birds. Some have a lot of yellow, but most are green, brown, yellow and white. I don't have any self birds, but can get hold of some. Q1/ If i put the Red Factor to my variegated birds, i should get orange variegated? Q2/ How will i get Opal?
Kind regards

Re: New to the forum
q1 quite correct m8,,,q2 you will have to purchase an opal bird,,,and breed it to your stock,,,opal bird x normal bird =all normal yng carrying opal,,,then normal/opal to opal[parent bird] will give you,,,theoretically 50 percent opal and 50 percent carrying opal,,,johnboy...

Re: New to the forum
Do you not value the Rollers for the quality & uniqueness of their song ? If you introduce colour canary genes for the sake of the visual effect, you will lose the subtlety of the Roller song genes & it will potentially be 'smothered' tonally.
It might be advisable to consider keeping the song canaries for their own sake & the colours for theirs ? True Rollers have an intermediate feather which is another potential bar to easy integration.
It's already done, but you'll probably end up losing 'some' of each to no great gain with either.

Hi NigelH, i absolutely dont intend to destroy my song birds. As i am a very dedicated advocate of the Roller Canary. However, i am going to dabble in genetics and have a go at a few projects on the side. The song is number 1 priority, but i am going to see if i can create some " Eye Candy " as well Kind regards Ohartzerman.

Re: New to the forum
At the first cross, the 'Roller' song will be lost......the genetics of the 'integrity' of the Roller song are as complex as those of the colour variants. Whatever you intend, the outcome is probably, sadly, inevitable.
I'd take some advice from a Roller specialist, before contemplating going the route you are considering & keep Rollers & Coloured's apart. That way you will have quality & 'value' in both strains/types.

Hi NigelH, i am having problems understanding where you are coming from? Once again i shall repeat " I DO NOT intend to ruin my songbirds. What i do intend to do and keep them separate from my Roller Stock. Is HAVE a few " Genetics Projects " on the go.
I have a mate that spends a great deal of time breeding Mules x Glosters. But he is RUINING the Glosters Song. He is not only wasting his time, but he is also RUINING a breed like the Gloster. Wouldn't you agree NigelH??
Kind regards

wasted on Nigel mate, he don't do eye candy, or change in any way shape or form, to him, you are the anti Christ , he will be on the next flight out to your neck of the woods, running at ya with a cross , and clutching a bottle of water , straight out of St. Peter's font, and twat the lot, all over your head , it's a heavy burden to carry, but some one has to do itOhartzerman wrote:Hi NigelH, i absolutely dont intend to destroy my song birds. Re: New to the forum
Hey Reece Hammond, thanks for putting a smile on my face.
I have been chased by the Anti Christ mob before lol. A friend and I spent the good part of 10 years putting Roller pigeon colours into.Flying Tipplers. It was cheaper to do it yourself than import birds out of the UK at £700 per bird plus extra's. So I went and visited a good mate who kept Show Rollers ( didn't want to use a performing Roller as we would have transferred the rolling gene) and came home with a box full of colours, Pied and Grizzle marked birds fir the project. Then it started, the traditionalists hammered me, agreements took place, was kicked off forums etc. But now, who has the last laugh? Why of course me,and my mate lol. " Our Birds " are now, spread right across Australia and pictures pop up on Forums and Facebook with the most amazing stories attached lol. " ALL " the people who rubbished and wanted to hang us. We're the first people that wanted them when we achieved our goal.
All the do gooders, choked on humble pie

Kind regards
