Need advice with colored birds!

Hi everyone,

I am very new to colorbred canaries and I want to learn!
I picked these guys up today and they are in breeding condition!
Any info would be great!

Hi Perry welcome, looking at your birds it appears you have 4non intensive (Buff) and only 1 intensive (yellow or feathered)and it is the normal practice to pair buff x yellow.Dave should be along soon enough to recommend the correct course of action.

Hi perry welcome, which are the cocks and which are the hens

Hi Perry 1st we need to work out cocks and hens?
The middle non int and the one on the ground look like cocks.
the non int at the top will be a hen,with possibility the one one with it's head in the feeder could be a hen.
the int bird is difficult to tell from the angle it is sitting.
As Ray has asked, do you know what you have? regarding what sex they are?

I have one int Cock and one Non-int cock.
Two non-int hens and one int hen from my understanding.
I do beleive the procedure is to breed a int to non-int!
Would I be correct?
I have a good friend that has been breeding birds including Red factors for 40 years or more coming to my house today to teach me some lessons on Colorbred birds

From the photo i can only see one int bird the rest look to be non int.

you will need to establish what your int bird?

yes int to non int is the correct pairing.

get your mate to have a look at them then you will possibily need to get another int bird.

Guys I have been tricked and not having great knowledge.I just had my friend here and he tells me that these birds have been already bred this year,100%!

The birds have 09 bands on them!

Where the birds colour feed in the nest.??
ARe they closed or split rings

They are closed bands!

If your birds have 09 closed rings they are still unflighted and i fail to see how they could have bred.

What needs to be understood is that in Canada, certainly in the Ontario, Quebec areas which are the hotspots for Coloured Canaries, traditionally experience very hard winters. Many breeders are employed in the construction industry and are effectively unemployed from Nov to Feb. During this period they breed their birds , obviously using artificial light.
I suspect that the birds that Perry has bought proved to be less than successfull at their breeding duties and have been unloaded. At this time it is unlikely that they will have reared 2 rounds so there is still a chance for Perry to breed some chicks.

Thats the mistake of thinking the UK way is the only way.
