North East & Cumbria Zone show report.

Had a very enjoyable day judging today at the North East & Cumbria CCBA Zone show. Disappointingly for the guys putting the show on there was only around 130 entered but the quality was very very good. The best exhibit was a intensive red clear lipochrome cock bird by ash foster, it has superb colour and was almost faultless, it has come up against ash’s ticked intensive red cock that won the ACS, on the day today the clear bird presented itself a little better and the ticked bird also had picked up a bit of muck on its feet so the clear got the nod although there wasn’t really anything in it between the 2.
Best melanin went to Paul Davey with a mosaic yellow black hen, this bird lacked a little lipochrome around the eye & the melanins could of been a touch more darker to nudge out Ash’s bird for best exhibit in show but it was still a lovely hen with great flank striations that beat a strong field of melanin birds.

There were some superb coloured red variegated lipochromes , nearly all of them had great colour but lost out to the clear bird on feather quality or other small faults.

Another bird to mention was John Holidays red mosaic cock bird, this was one if not the best red mosaic I’ve seen on a UK show bench , it had the perfect mask, Great lipochrome colour and very white where it needed to be, it came very close to beating the clear red into the top spot but i couldn’t give it that award as it had 1 red tail feather & it kept working the perches but facing the back of the cage and not facing me, for these reasons I could give it best in show, if not for the tail feather and the way it presented then it could of been the winner. This bird showed that the quality of red mosaics in the UK is on the up and I don’t think it will be too long before one does take a top award.

Other birds to mention we’re a nice mosaic red brown phaeo , great scallops. A intensive yellow satinette, both very nice examples.

Best junior was a mosaic red brown hen.

On a disappointing note there were no novices exhibiting at the show and all of us within the hobby need to put out thinking caps on as to how we buck this trend and get more people to exhibit, shows like the NE&C zone cannot carry on with low entry’s & no new novices coming through. It’s a fantastic show hall and the people and hospitality were first class. Let’s hope they get a better turnout next year. That said I enjoyed my morning and there were some superb birds.

Well done to the organisers & all who exhibited.

    Many thanks
