    Hi all,

These are the chicks from my intensive red male (seen in my profile picture) and my non-intensive red ivory female. I was hoping that the male wasn't a carrier of the ivory gene but these chicks look pretty much like their ivory mother to me! Would you all agree that they are ivory? Droppings are red so I don't believe they are poorly coloured reds. Are they likely to darken at all with age? They are 15 days old currently.

They look very much like young reds to me. They will change significantly in colour when they moult.

I would say you are correct, the top three definitely look ivory too me! The reds look so much darker than that in the nest!
Good pairing though as split ivory, so potentially both cocks and hens, be nice to see them on the perch!
    Nice one.

"Colour feeding in the nest" ~ When is colour feeding meant to be started?
I have a one day old red chick in the nest. The cockbird is feeding it, haven't seen the mother feeding it yet, but she is a bit flighty.... two other eggs not yet hatched.

Should I be adding colour feed to their water and softfood now?

    Cheers

I'm with Chris on this. Probably no point in colour feeding them now until the six week mark.
Wings and tail feathers will most likely be orange. Pet shop will probably pay only $1.50 instead of $2.
    Bugger.

Oh hell. And here I was with high expectations of getting 1kg of oats per bird. I'll spray them with food dye.

EDIT: Another red chick this morning. I'm 2/3 Smile
